SIDNEY - The high demand for shark fin market in Asia is rated as the cause of the shrinking of the world's shark populations.

This was stated by the Australian government and anti-wildlife trade community, as reported by AFP on Thursday (06/11/2008).

The Australian government said that currently one in five shark species are threatened due to shark fishing on a large scale by the fishermen. Weak control of the government against illegal fishing is also a cause of the shrinking population of sharks.

"Shark populations are becoming steadily shrinking, and will change the ecosystem because of the number of predators in the ocean will decrease as well," the report said.

Meanwhile, Glenn Sant antiperdagangan a member of the community wildlife TRAFFIC said it did not prohibit the consumption of shark meat and fins, but he deplored the exploitation and manhunt conducted fishermen.

According to Sant, the main reason for the massive hunt is the high demand for shark fin market in Asia.
